DeSoto ISD Observes National Fire Prevention Week in Partnership with DeSoto Fire Department

DeSoto Independent School District proudly joins schools and
communities across the nation in recognizing National Fire Prevention Week
(October 6–12, 2025). The observance, established to commemorate the Great
Chicago Fire of 1871, serves as an annual reminder of the importance of fire
safety education in protecting lives and property.
In educational settings, National Fire Prevention Week
emphasizes teaching students the fundamentals of fire safety and prevention,
empowering them with the knowledge and habits that can save lives in
emergencies. By providing students with age-appropriate lessons and hands-on
experiences, the district helps equip scholars to recognize potential hazards,
respond appropriately in case of fire, and understand the role of first
responders in keeping communities safe.
“Fire safety education is a critical part of ensuring that
our students are prepared to respond effectively in emergencies,” said Stephanie
McCloud, DeSoto ISD Chief Academic Officer. “Through these programs, we not
only strengthen students’ understanding of fire prevention but also cultivate
lifelong safety habits that protect families and communities.”
As part of its commitment to this important observance, DeSoto
ISD is partnering with the DeSoto Fire Department (DFD) to deliver
interactive fire safety programming at campuses across the district. Throughout
the week, DFD firefighters will visit schools with fire safety vehicles as
dynamic backdrops for live demonstrations, discussions, and engaging activities
to educate scholars about fire prevention and emergency preparedness.
“Our collaboration with the DeSoto Fire Department allows us
to provide students with meaningful, real-world learning experiences that go
beyond the classroom,” said Dr. Gene Morrow, DeSoto ISD Executive Director
of Student and Staff Support Services. “By making fire safety education
accessible and engaging, we are giving our students the tools they need to stay
safe and informed.”
DeSoto ISD recognizes that fire safety awareness is an
essential component of student learning and well-being. The district’s
collaboration with the DeSoto Fire Department underscores a shared commitment
to preparing scholars with practical knowledge and fostering a culture of
safety both at school and at home.
