DeSoto ISD Libraries Celebrate Grandparents Day with “Reading is Grand” Event at West Middle School

DeSoto ISD Libraries hosted a heartfelt and memorable
Grandparents Day celebration at West Middle School, made possible by the
“Reading is Grand” grant awarded by the Black Caucus of the American Library
Association, Inc. This special occasion gave scholars and their grandparents
treasured moments to create new memories, strengthen their bonds, and enjoy a
reflective morning over a light breakfast.
Nearly every seat in the West Middle School library was
filled as scholars and their grandparents participated in activities, shared
hugs and smiles, and began their day together in a warm and inviting
atmosphere. Unlike traditional celebrations, this event took families on a
meaningful journey inspired by the book As Brave As You by Jason
Reynolds.
The story follows two children spending the summer with
their grandparents, discovering that growing up means learning to be brave in
new ways. The book beautifully highlights that courage isn’t just about
fearlessness—it also involves understanding, kindness, and the wisdom that
comes with age.
Following the book overview, West Middle School Library
Assistant Patricia Shaw led a thoughtful book chat, encouraging grandparents
and scholars to discuss how the themes of bravery and family resilience relate
to their own life experiences. This engaging conversation fostered deeper
connections and reflections across generations.
This event was also a partnership with the DeSoto City
Library. Suzy Card, library associate, shared information about teen activities
and groups available at the library and encouraged students and their families
to obtain a library card as part of the National Library Card Initiative. Card
explained, “The books we selected for this event all focus on grandparents and
the special relationships we share with them, because without grandparents, we
wouldn’t be who we are today. Also, since September is National Library Card
Sign-Up Month, we invite all DeSoto ISD students and residents to come and get
a library card with us.”
As the event concluded with hugs, smiles, and photos, Shaw
encouraged families to continue reading together. “Let’s prove others wrong
when they say if you want to hide something from people, place it in a book,”
she said, inspiring everyone to nurture a lifelong love of reading within their
families.
Grandparents’ Day was signed into legislation as an official
holiday in 1979. It is a national holiday celebrated in the United States on
the first Sunday after Labor Day each September to honor grandparents,
recognize their important role in families and communities, and acknowledge the
love, wisdom, and support they offer to their grandchildren and society. The
day encourages intergenerational bonds among families and serves as a
meaningful opportunity to celebrate these special relationships.
