Ruby Young Talented and Gifted Academy proudly celebrated the achievements of 13 exceptional young scholars who recently completed the prestigious Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) program, focusing on drone technology. These students were honored for their dedication and successful completion of the program, showcasing their commitment to excellence in this cutting-edge field.
The drone program at Ruby Young Talented and Gifted Academy, launched in the 2021-2022 school year in collaboration with the DeSoto Police Department, was designed to introduce students to drone technology and its applications while fostering learning in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields.
Through this partnership, students gained hands-on experience in drone flight and safety while learning about the role of drones in public safety and law enforcement. The DeSoto Police Department provided valuable mentorship, offering expertise on drone operation, safety protocols, ethics, and potential career opportunities in technology and law enforcement.
"This program leads to career pathways that could help our students soar above others who didn't have this opportunity. Not only does it focus on drone flying, but it could also lead to careers at the police department, NASA, or any other organization using this technology," said Ruby Young Principal Dr. Xavier Lewis.
A proud member of the department, Corporal Montemayor expressed his enthusiasm for the program.
"I think it’s great because it allows you to really learn who these students are and how they operate," said Montemayor. "I love drones, and I like how we use them in public safety. So, to have kids coming up who can potentially do the same thing and lead the future is huge."
Thduation ceremony was a heartwarming event, filled with proud parents, faculty, and staff. As the names of the young drone operators were called, joy was seen among many families. Parents beamed with pride as their children walked the stage to receive their certificates. Tim Woodard, a parent of one of the graduates, expressed how happy he was seeing his daughter complete the program.
"I want to give kudos to Ruby Young for giving the kids a chance and experience toward their future. I’m just glad they are continuing this program," said Woodard.
As the ceremony concluded, the students stood together, proud of their accomplishments. Their newly earned o limitless career opportunities in technology, law enforcement, and beyond.
