Curtistene S. McCowan Middle School Observes Hispanic Heritage Month with Schoolwide Fair
On Thursday, October 3, 2024, Curtistene S. McCowan Middle School came alive with vibrant colors, flavors, and sounds during its Fourth Annual Hispanic Heritage Festival celebrating the cultural traditions of Hispanic communities. Students, staff, and volunteers joined together to honor Hispanic Heritage Month with exciting performances, beautiful art displays, and delicious food in an unforgettable day of celebration and learning.
The band energized the crowd with a lively rendition of “Malagueña,” filling the air with a spirited piece rooted in Hispanic musical tradition.
The dance department captivated the audience with “Chilly Cha Cha,” a popular Hispanic line dance, while student dancers showcased projects highlighting prominent Hispanic figures across various fields, from arts and sciences to politics and literature.
Art students contributed stunning, colorful canvas displays of Día de Los Muertos masks. Ms. Crawford, our talented art teacher, hosted a popular face-painting booth.
The choir department enriched the event with inspiring speeches, sharing information about iconic Hispanic vocalists who have shaped the music industry.
In addition to the other activities held, MMS’ Student Council provided delicious elotes and other Tex-Mex favorites, adding a flavorful touch to the festivities.
This successful event would not have been possible without the invaluable support of volunteers from Altrusa Southwest Dallas County and McCowan Middle School's PTA, who helped oversee concessions, games, and tickets. Their commitment and support were integral to the smooth running of the event, making the experience enjoyable for all.
The celebration extended through October 15th, at which time, the ladies of Altrusa Southwest Dallas County hosted a special book giveaway, gifting a bilingual book signed by author Linda Young. Three lucky winners, Sade Hunt, 6th grade; Izaac Sneed, 7th grade; and Madison Brooks, 8th grade, received a gift bag featuring the signed book as a lasting memory of Hispanic Heritage Month.
McCowan Middle School’s Hispanic Heritage festival was an inspiring reminder of the diversity within its campus community. MMS looks forward to carrying on this tradition for years to come!
