During the October 26 Board Meeting, the DeSoto Independent School District Board of Trustees voted not to approve the administration’s recommendation to seek a TEA waiver that would extend the district’s return-to-school transition period an additional four weeks.

Ultimately if also approved by TEA, the waiver would have allowed the District to extend its phase-in process until Nov. 30 instead of Nov. 4, allowing more time to monitor local COVID-19 conditions in Dallas County while continuing to minimize the number of students onsite.

Parents and families who have chosen and prefer home-supervised learning via DeSoto ISD’s Anytime, Anywhere Learning system may continue at-home learning after November 4.

Of DeSoto ISD’s nearly 8,000 students, only about 23% of them have opted to return to Campus-Supervised Learning. The District has already begun returning Special Education units and its youngest learners to campuses if those families have selected that option.

DeSoto ISD will continue to use its already established phase-in schedule with the following group of students returning to their campuses on Wednesday, November 4:

  • Sixth through Twelfth Grade Students Who Receive Special Education Services

  • Third through Fifth Grade Students

  • Seventh and Eighth Grade Students

  • Eleventh and Twelfth Grade Students

Parents should expect an email from the District the week of Nov. 2 confirming their learning selection for the third six-weeks and providing an opportunity to change their learning selection. The deadline to make the change from Home-Supervised Learning to Campus-Supervised Learning is Nov. 9, 2020. Parents may elect to switch from Campus to Home-Supervised Learning at any time.
