DeSoto ISD Hosts Second Virtual Town Hall
The District addresses concerns regarding state funding, metal detectors and educational opportunities.
DeSoto Independent School District hosted its second Virtual Town Hall on Friday, January 24, 2020 via Facebook LIVE with panelists including Superintendent of Schools, D’Andre Weaver, Ph.D, Chief of Human Resources, Mia Stroy, Chief of Student Support Services, Natalia Fernandez along with students from DeSoto High School and moderated by Director of Communications, Tiffanie Blackmon-Jones.
During the live event, Stroy and Fernandez discussed various initiatives their respective departments are working on to propel the district forward and would allow better opportunities for students and staff.
Weaver addressed comments, questions and concerns from parents, students and other district stakeholders that were submitted prior to the event and during the live stream. Topics included reading comprehension levels of students, the handling of the district’s federal and state funds and the substitute teacher shortage.
The Town Hall was filmed live from the DeSoto High School Broadcast studio and included production assistance from broadcast students, Q’Damien Jones and DeVeon Johnson. Additionally, students who are a part of Dr. Weaver’s Student Advisory Council submitted questions to the Superintendent during a Q&A segment with DHS students, Jalaysiya Smith and London Wright. Smith voiced their concerns regarding the entrance process at the high school as it relates to metal detectors and discussion regarding the measures the district is taking to ensure greater educational opportunities for students.
DeSoto ISD will continue to host Virtual Town Hall meetings throughout the school year as a method of communication between students, staff, and members of the community.
