Known for his steady leadership, fiscal stewardship, and commitment to student success, Brent Mitchell has built a career guiding complex school systems through periods of transformation while maintaining a focus on educational quality, operational stability, and positive district culture.

Mr. Mitchell’s journey into education reflects the transformative power of opportunity. Born in Arkansas and raised by his grandmother, he experienced firsthand how dedicated educators can change the trajectory of a young person’s life. At the same time, athletics played a formative role in his development and instilled the discipline, work ethic, and teamwork that continue to shape his leadership approach today.

He began his career in education as an award winning teacher and coach, experiences that grounded his leadership philosophy in the daily realities of classrooms and campuses. Over the years, he has advanced through multiple levels of educational leadership, serving in roles that span campus administration, instructional leadership, and district operations across Texas, Missouri, and Arkansas. His career reflects a deep commitment to navigating complex systems and serving diverse student populations.

Most recently, Mr. Mitchell served as Acting Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent of Support Services and Chief of Staff for the Ferguson-Florissant School District in Missouri, where he oversaw districtwide operations, student services, and financial stewardship for a $163 million budget and more than 1,500 employees. In this role, he led a strategic financial realignment that reduced district expenditures by $13.7 million, strengthening fiscal sustainability while preserving core instructional priorities and student services.

Under his leadership, the district implemented comprehensive improvements to school safety systems, student support services, and campus culture. These improvements included expanded restorative practices, strengthened Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), and redesigned student conduct procedures. These efforts contributed to measurable improvements in student discipline outcomes, attendance, and overall school climate across multiple campuses.

Mr. Mitchell has also led initiatives to strengthen academic performance and organizational effectiveness. His work helped advance early literacy outcomes, increase graduation rates to 93 percent, and expand college and career readiness opportunities, while maintaining strong accountability and stakeholder engagement.

As interim superintendent of DeSoto ISD, Mr. Mitchell is focused on guiding the district through its next chapter by emphasizing financial sustainability, safe and supportive learning environments, and a strong, unified district culture. A transformational leader grounded in service, he is committed to ensuring that every student has access to high-quality educational opportunities that prepare them for lifelong success.

Mr. Mitchell holds two master’s degrees in Educational Leadership and Teaching and Curriculum from Harding University, an Educational Specialist degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Central Arkansas, and a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.
