DeSoto ISD hosted partners from the University of Texas and national educational non-profit Transcend Education on Oct. 30 at Katherine Johnson Technology Magnet Academy. The group joined DeSoto ISD Chief of Research, Evaluation and Design Benjamin Mackey and Katherine Johnson Principal Angela Batiste for a day at the campus which included an overview of the campus and its academic admissions-based programming, a briefing on the desired outcomes of the partnership and classroom visits and observations.

The work that will take place at Katherine Johnson this year will serve to develop a model for education across the district. Similar practices and approaches will become the standard at all district campuses.

Katherine Johnson Technology  Magnet Academy was opened in Fall 2018 as a K-5 magnet school in DeSoto ISD. The following year, as based on community feedback, the school was redesigned to serve as an academic admissions-based campus for academically talented students. As part of the redesign, the University of Texas and Transcend will partner with the district to create curriculum, offer staff coaching and professional development and enhance and deepen instructional approaches and student learning experiences.
