DeSoto ISD received the prestigious Department of Education Investing in Innovation (i3) Grant worth $2.9 million dollars. The U.S. Department of Education announced the grants in November 2015. The additional $2.9M brings the total of major grants and energy savings over the past several years to $22.8M – a total just under 30% of the annual operating budget. The 13 grantee organizations — selected from more than 400 applications — had to secure private sector matching funds by December 2015 to formalize their awards as i3 grantees. Through these projects, i3 will support local efforts to start or expand evidence-based programs that can transform the academic trajectory of students, educators and their schools.
“DeSoto will use the funding to replicate the iSTEAM3D model that is currently in the middle schools to the elementary and high school levels,” said Harris. “This program is showing gains in closing the achievement gap and testing results.”
