DeSoto ISD nurtures and values community and school partnerships, therefore our students are invited to apply to be Judge for a Day in the City of DeSoto. The purpose of this program is to help DeSoto ISD students understand how a municipal court really operates and understand the rigor and rewards of being a judge.

DeSoto ISD students in grades 10 through 12 can apply for the program based on the criteria. DHS and Freshman Campus staff will review applications send the top five student applications to the district committee for consideration. The DeSoto ISD Selection Committee will pick two students to spend the day with the judge, one in the Fall and one in the Spring. The two opportunity dates this school year are: Wednesday, October 18, 2016 and Wednesday, April 26, 2017.
Students are evaluated on competitive grades, attendance, citizenship, teacher and community recommendations, and an essay.

Judge for a Day Criteria
- Attendance at least 98%
- 3.5 GPA
- Good Citizenship - no discipline or referrals for two years
- Two Teacher Recommendations
- One Community Recommendation (not parent; if teacher, recommendation must include reference to non-school community service project)
- Student Essay - 1500 words or less that answers the following question: What are the attributes of an effective judge? In answering this question, address educational and temperamental factors as well as consequences to the judicial system and society if the Judge does not maintain these attributes. HINT: Google the Texas Bar Association and the American Bar Association.
