Statement on the Passing of Mayor McCowan

Mayor McCowan

In DeSoto ISD, we are deeply saddened by the news of the passing of the Honorable Curtistene S. McCowan who gained her wings following a hard-fought battle with lung cancer. An ever-present and vocal supporter of community-wide excellence and progress, Mayor McCowan leaves behind a legacy of hard work, commitment, dedication and action.

In every capacity, our beloved mayor taught us all what it means to exude excellence, to never settle for mediocrity and to set and carry out a vision for what is possible.

Our district has greatly benefitted from her service and advocacy as a parent, active member of the Parent-Teacher Association, a member of the DeSoto ISD Board of Trustees and as a highly-engaged mentor and member of our school community.

Mayor McCowan taught us all to soar.

She was a trailblazer, a way-maker, and a glass ceiling breaker who led with passion, empathy and expectation. The City of DeSoto and DeSoto ISD are significantly better because of her service and leadership.

I will miss her tremendously.

We spoke often as Mayor McCowan was one of my biggest cheerleaders. She was always available for a word of advice or encouragement and for that, I am eternally grateful.

I am humbled by the sacrifices of her family who so selflessly shared her with us. The district extends its sincerest gratitude for her lifetime of service and its deepest condolences to her family during this time.

May her legacy thrive in our own commitment to the service and improvement of this incredible community.
