Katherine Johnson

Given the community’s perception that Katherine Johnson Technology Magnet Academy should have opened as a true admissions-based campus last year, we are fulfilling that promise. We aim to be responsive to the needs of the community by creating an environment in which academically-advanced and gifted students can grow.

At the April 15, 2019 Special Called Meeting, the DeSoto ISD Board of Trustees approved the reconfiguration of Katherine Johnson Technology Magnet Academy. The now-kindergarten through fifth-grade campus will be reconfigured to serve students in pre-kindergarten through sixth grade as an academic admissions-based campus. In addition, the district is planning to expand the PK-6 program to serve students in PK-12 grade. This change will take effect starting with the 2019-2020 school year.

Current Katherine Johnson students, students across DeSoto ISD and students prospective to DeSoto ISD will have the opportunity to apply for the academic admissions-based program starting April 29, 2019, at which date the district will host an informational meeting regarding the academic admissions-based program and the date for which the online application will open.

As a result of the Board’s approval, current Katherine Johnson students will be rezoned or will have the opportunity to select an alternate campus through the district’s annual transfer window. To support this transition, the district has drafted a revision to the elementary attendance zones and will provide an update regarding the revised zones pending Board approval.
