Reconnect Options

Last spring, the coronavirus global health pandemic, sent the world into crisis response mode. Seeking to create a sense of normalcy through education, DeSoto ISD developed and implemented Anytime, Anywhere Learning.

As we approach the start of the 2020-2021 school year, our families may have questions about what school will look like for the upcoming academic year.

DeSoto ISD will utilize the Anytime, Anywhere Learning system to guide education for our students this fall through two options designed to provide choice and support for our families and their scholars.

The first and primary option for learning next year will be the Home-Supervised Learning option.

Through this option:

  • Students will learn remotely from home utilizing the Anytime, Anywhere Learning system.
  • Students will participate in online, teacher-guided instruction to support learning and progress.
  • Students will have access to small- and whole-group virtual instruction led by a district educator with opportunities for check-ins, progress monitoring and support.
  • Students will have access to healthy and nutritious meals through the current district meal distribution sites at which students can obtain daily meals via grab and go distribution.

Another choice DeSoto ISD will offer families is Campus-Supervised Learning.

Through this option:

  • DeSoto ISD will provide computer lab access supervised by district educators.
  • Students will learn utilizing the Anytime, Anywhere Learning system.
  • Students will participate in online, teacher-guided instruction to support learning and progress.
  • Students will have access to small- and whole-group virtual instruction led by a district educator with opportunities for check-ins, progress monitoring and support.
  • Students will have access to breakfast and lunch.
  • Transportation to and from campus will NOT be provided.

Upon selecting a learning option, families are committed to that choice for the duration of the six weeks grading period. However, families seeking to transition from campus-supervised learning to home-supervised learning may do so at any time; those seeking to shift from home-supervised learning to campus-supervised learning may do so at the conclusion of the six weeks period. The district will provide more information as well as information regarding how to request revised placement in the coming weeks.

Throughout the school year, the district will continue to monitor developments related to COVID-19 and reassess campus safety and wellness on a quarterly basis in order to inform decisions to protect and safeguard students and staff.

DeSoto ISD is excited to support educational choice and flexibility for our families which are focused on mental, physical and emotional health, safety and wellness during these unprecedented times.

It is important to note that whether families choose to engage in home-supervised learning or campus-supervised learning, both experiences will be virtually led and facilitated by district teachers.

As a school district, we want to ensure a smooth virtual learning experience, and that’s why we’ve been hard at work reviewing and revising the Anytime, Anywhere Learning system to ease access and increase student engagement.

This school year, DeSoto ISD has transitioned all student learning management systems to Schoology--your dashboard for learning and teacher communication.

Here, you can access learning guides, check-in with your child’s teacher, check grades and progress, so that, as a parent, you can focus on supporting your child’s learning versus navigating multiple systems.

This year, district educators will lead, guide and facilitate learning and instruction through a hands-on virtual approach ensuring your child has the direct instruction and personal engagement needed to learn virtually at an optimal level.

A few of the recent improvements include:

  • Parent and student training to help them navigate Schoology, Zoom, and other tools
  • Adoption of a Social-Emotional Curriculum for all students
  • Inclusion of real-life connections, project-based opportunities, and meaningful assessments
  • Adjusted school day schedule to increase clarity and improve student access to teachers
  • Updated grading guidelines and opportunities for students to demonstrate daily progress
  • Alignment between all departments to ensure student access to all supports in our system
  • Increased number of electronic devices available to share with families

Anytime, Anywhere Learning brings the classroom to you. So, whether your family has opted into home supervised learning or campus supervised learning, your child will have access to a high-quality teacher delivering top-notch, engaging instruction online every day this school year.

To further support your child’s academic growth and intellectual development, DeSoto ISD is adopting a competency-based learning model that will allow your child to self-pace based on his or her mastery of content in each course. As teachers monitor your child’s progress and mastery, they will assess the need for interventions, additional support and resources as well as reteaching in order to give your child the support he or she needs to be successful.

DeSoto ISD families are encouraged to complete the online registration process and the learning selection survey for each child in your household for the upcoming school year.

DeSoto ISD families will receive an email on Friday, July 10, 2020, via School Messenger to select which option works best for their child, his or her learning needs and the family's ability to support and supervise home learning.

On Monday, July 13, 2020, DeSoto ISD staff will receive information in the weekly staff newsletter detailing information regarding staff return to school dates and information regarding preparing for back-to-school. In addition, will receive a survey providing an opportunity to communicate work preferences for the upcoming school year.

Both families and staff are asked to submit responses to work preferences and learning preferences, respectively, by Friday, July 17, 2020.

Each campus will host informational Zoom meetings as well as make calls directly to each family in DeSoto ISD to address any questions or concerns families may have regarding plans for the upcoming school year.
